2020 Character Breakdown

  • The role of Judy Garland has been cast.

    Judy Garland’s newest husband, tall and physically imposing, handsome with an appearance of a “caring” side but is domineering and controlling, charming, but can be argumentative and physical, definitely has a selfish dark side with the underlying quality of possible violence.

    Anthony
    Age: 40-50
    Gender: Male

    English or Scottish, Judy’s accompanist and musical advisor as well as sometimes spiritual guide, gay and soft spoken with a clever edge, gentle and caring with an inner strength, ethical and honest, skilled pianist, must be able to accompany Garland in scenes, is capable of support and understanding, and yet is aware of the inevitable outcome ahead. Note: For the audition the actor will be asked to play the piano in a style of the show.

    A strong character actor able to play various types and characters, must be able to speak various British dialects, will also understudy Mickey Deans.

  • Tevye

    The likeable, hard-working, pious dairyman who always tries to see the positive side of life. He is a proud patriarch and father of five daughters, closely raised according to the old scriptures.

    Golde

    Tevye’s strong-willed wife who wishes for her daughters to have good husbands and live easier than she and Tevye.

    Tzeitel

    Tevye’s eldest daughter, who is madly in love with Motel. She is loyal to her family but typically challenges the town’s traditions.

    Hodel

    Tevye’s second eldest daughter, who becomes involved with Perchik. She eventually leaves Anatevka to join Perchik in Siberia.

    Chava

    Tevye’s middle daughter who loves to read. Falls in love and runs off with Fydeka, a Russian soldier.

    Shprintze

    Tevye’s fouth eldest daughter who takes lessons at home from Perchik.

    Age: 9 to 13


    Bielke

    Tevye’s youngest daughter. Takes lessons at home from Perchik.

    Yente

    The meddling matchmaker. She is a widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip.

    Motel

    The poor and meek tailor who shares a deep love with Tzeitel. Sensitive and nervous, but sincere and friendly.

    Perchik

    The outspoken student and visitor to Anatevka, who constantly challenges the traditions of the town. He eventually falls in love with Hodel.

    Lazar Wolf

    The feisty, brawny butcher and the town’s wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry Tzeitel.

    Avram

    Runs the local bookshop and keeps the town advised of all the news in the area.

    Grandma Tzeitel

    Golde’s deceased grandmother, who endorses the marriage between Tzeitel and Motel.

    Fruma-sarah

    Lazar’s Wolf’s deceased first wife. She becomes enraged when her husband plans to wed Tzeitel.

    Constable

    Russian military official stationed near Anatevka who knows the villagers well, however he has superficial relationships with the villagers.

    Fyedka

    A strong, young Russian soldier who sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava. He challenges Tevye’s imposed silence.

  • Norma Desmond
    Age 50-60
    Gender: Female

    A beautiful but eccentric faded star of the silent screen era. Once the biggest name in Hollywood, she is a recluse in her decaying mansion. A woman of great pride and passion with hopes of a comeback. Must be able to negotiate difficult rhythms and melodies and have huge vocal chops as the show is almost sung-through; 
    seeking star names.


    Joe Gillis
    Age 30-49
    Gender: Male 

    A handsome but just past his prime screenwriter whose career is in decline. His playboy looks and manners used to open every door but things have changed. He moves in with Norma Desmond all the while falling in love with young Betty Schaefer; an absolute charmer with a dark side, strong legit/pop voice to an A.

    Max von Mayerling
    Age: 55-65
    Gender: Male

    Norma’s devoted butler, protects her from the outside world, a dark and ominous presence in the mansion, he was Norma’s director and first husband, dramatic baritone.

    Age: 21-30
    Gender: Female 

    A beautiful young aspiring writer with spunk, teams up with Joe team up on a script and they fall in love, ultimately Joe breaks her heart, legit/pop soprano.

    Gender: Male

    The iconic Hollywood film director who discovered Norma Desmond and made her a star, historic figure, baritone.

    Betty’s fiancé, a self-described “Jewish Casanova,” a good-hearted guy, baritenor.
